Common problems with Ethnic Skin
Hyperpigmentation
In skin types IV-VI , any minor trauma to the skin such as a pimple or a minor cut or burn can cause dark marks on the skin. This is due to the melanin (what gives skin its color) stimulation that occurs from this trauma. Without treatment this discoloration can take months to fade. Treatment for this condition is generally prescription creams and chemical peels.
Scarring/Keloids
Keloids are scar tissue that get bumped up or raised. They often can become painful and in some cases cause disfigurement. Dr. Badia generally can treat keloid scars with steroid injections or prescription medications. In some instances, the keloid tissue can be cut out or excised.
Hair Loss
Hair loss is a common complaint that we see in the office. Hair loss can be due to many different factors. Often hair styles that are wore too tightly or pulled back can cause traction alopecia. In some cases, autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, anemias and lupus can be the cause. And for some of us, hair loss unfortunately runs in the family. Dr. Badia will evaluate each patient individually to treat the underlying cause of hair loss. Treatments often include low level laser therapy which can work in all skin types as well as topical and oral medications.
 Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a skin condition where patches of skin lose their pigment. This condition can become embarrassing, especially for those with darker skin types because of the contrast of white patches against dark skin. Treatment options have come a long way for vitiligo and Florida Skin Center is proud to offer the newest treatments available for this condition. At FSC, we offer narrowband UVB light therapy for treatment of vitiligo. This treatment therapy is safe in all skin types to re-pigment skin affected by vitiligo.
Skin Care
When choosing a skin care regimen for Ethnic skin there are many things that need to be considered. Ethnic skin produces more pigment, which makes scarring and discoloration a more common problem. Trauma to the skin as minor as a scratch or pimple triggers excess melanin production and results in dark patches. If not treated right away these marks can take months sometimes years to fade.
